ASIC miner power consumption explained

Electricity is one of the largest operating variables in ASIC mining. These formulas let you verify the numbers yourself before buying.

Watts and kWh are different

Watts describe instantaneous power demand. kWh measure energy over time. The basic formula is watts ÷ 1,000 × hours.

A 3,000 W miner running 24 hours therefore uses roughly 72 kWh per day before real-world variation.

Convert kWh into money

Multiply energy by the all-in electricity price you actually pay. At €0.20/kWh, 72 kWh is €14.40/day or about €432 over 30 days.

Tariffs can include time-of-use pricing, taxes and fixed charges. Use your own effective rate rather than a marketing number.

Use the VoltASIC calculator

Estimate current at 230 V

A simple screening calculation is watts ÷ volts. 3,000 W ÷ 230 V is about 13 A. This is an order-of-magnitude check, not a circuit design.

Breaker rating, cable size, ambient temperature, continuous loading and other devices still need to be considered.

Convert power into heat

Nearly all electrical energy consumed by an ASIC becomes heat. A useful conversion is about 3.412 BTU/h per watt.

A 3,000 W miner therefore releases roughly 10,236 BTU/h into the environment, useful when planning extraction or cooling.

Compare efficiency, not only hashrate

Before buying, compare power draw, efficiency, noise and annual electricity cost alongside hashrate.
